LOI Sides Learn Their European Opponents

Earlier on today, the Champions League First Qualifying Round draw was made, in which Dundalk were the sole LOI representative. Dundalk were drawn out of the bowl to face FC Riga of Latvia. With a number of potential banana skins in the draw, Dundalk will likely fancy their chances of advancing to the Second Qualifying Round.  The tie will be played over two legs on the 9/10th and 16/17th of July.

The Champions League draw was followed by the draw for the Europa League First Qualifying Round draw. The LOI had three representatives in the bowl for this draw. These representatives were Shamrock Rovers, Cork City, and controversially, Saint Patrick’s Athletic. Shamrock Rovers were the first LOI team to be drawn, facing Brann of Norway. Rovers were followed quickly in the same round by Cork City, Cork will face the winner of Progres Niederkorn and Cardiff Metropolitan University. Cork will be hoping to avoid Progres from Luxembourg who knocked out Scottish side Rangers in the qualifying rounds two years ago. The final LOI side to be drawn was Saint Patrick’s Athletic. Pat’s will face Swedish side Norrkoping. After their surprise inclusion in the competition, Pat’s will be hoping to advance from a close tie. Shamrock Rovers will fancy their chances of advancing, but all eyes on will be on Cork and Pats to see if they can put their poor domestic form to the side to advance in Europe. These ties are scheduled to be played over two legs on the 11th and 18th of July.
